A simple machine is a device that makes work easier by changing the direction or magnitude of a force. It does NOT reduce the total work done — it just makes the task more convenient. The six simple machines: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw, and wedge.

A lever is a rigid bar that rotates around a fixed point called the fulcrum. It has three classes based on the position of fulcrum (F), effort (E), and load (L):

The mechanical advantage of a lever = Load/Effort = Effort arm/Load arm.

A fixed pulley changes the direction of force (pull down to lift up) but does not multiply it. A movable pulley multiplies force — mechanical advantage = 2. Combining fixed and movable pulleys creates a block-and-tackle system with even greater advantage.

An inclined plane (ramp) allows you to lift a load by pushing it along a longer, gentler slope instead of lifting it straight up. Less force is needed, but over a greater distance. Mechanical advantage = Length of slope / Height.

Why This Works

Simple machines obey the principle of work: Work input = Work output (in an ideal machine). If you apply less force, you must apply it over a greater distance. The total work (force times distance) remains the same — but the task becomes manageable.


Common Mistake

Students think simple machines “reduce the work done.” They do NOT reduce work — they make it easier by changing force direction or magnitude. You still do the same amount of work (actually slightly more in reality, due to friction).

A screw is just an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. A wedge is two inclined planes placed back to back. Once you see that all six machines are variations of the lever, inclined plane, or pulley, the classification becomes simple.
