Eddy currents are the circulating induced currents produced in the body of a conductor when the magnetic flux through it changes.
The working
Definition
Eddy currents are loops of induced current set up within the volume of a bulk conductor exposed to a changing magnetic flux.
Cause
They are produced by electromagnetic induction and, by Lenz's law, flow in a direction that opposes the change in flux causing them.
Drawback
Eddy currents heat up the conductor and waste energy, so cores of transformers are laminated to reduce them.
Uses
They are usefully applied in induction furnaces, electromagnetic braking, and speedometers.
